For most people growing up in the 1990s, the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog were probably the first hidden items you came across in a video game. Depending on which title you're playing, attaining all the emeralds would change the ending, unlock a secret boss, or open a brand new level.

But for many, the most memorable moment in the series was when you obtained the seven Emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, allowing you to transform into Super Sonic. Not only does the furry speedster become invincible in this form, he can move at phenomenal speed, allowing him to reach previously inaccessible areas and complete most levels in seconds.

Now, that's not suggesting the game is a cake-walk afterward finding the Emeralds. Because Super Sonic's speed is so hard to control, you're bound to fall to your death once or twice. Also, you can only transform if you obtain 50 rings so you can't transform in levels with less than that many (including the final battle).

Having said that, it's still a blast to zoom through levels at breakneck speed and killing any enemy with the slightest touch.
