2. The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time
Metacritic Score: 99
For a whole generation of gamers, themselves maturing and growing across the 90s, Ocarina was the quintessential tale of fantasy escapism. A young unassuming child from the tucked-away Kokiri Forest, travelling through time and stopping an ancient evil, all the while mustering enough courage to press on in the face of an apocalypse he triggered by accident? That was one HELL of a premise to then explore an entire open-world of potential, characterful charm and item-based progression.
It was this beautiful blend of light RPG mechanics and age-old fairytale tropes that let millions of us get whisked away entirely to Hyrule; its monumental highs being just as enjoyable today as back in 1998 (though I'd recommend the 3DS remaster if you're coming in fresh).
Indeed, Ocarina of Time gave us everything from the first 3D take on the legendary Zelda formula, to medium-changing innovations like Z-targeting, which would change the face of third-person combat forever. It's the gorgeous soundtrack and masterful blend of challenge, player intuition and solid gameplay that makes Ocarina an all-time great though.
