10 Horrifying Hellscapes That Video Game Heroes Call Home

3. Literal Hell - DOOM series

For many a gamer, DOOM was their first experience in horror gaming. A corridor shooter released in 1993, the hellbound game exploded into a highly successful franchise which is still going today. How could it not? The concept is simple; you are the DOOM guy, an unnamed, action-hero of a marine sent to a Mars colony base only to find everyone dead, hundreds of demons running amok and a literal portal to hell.

The hell of DOOM looks like somebody gave the heavy metal version of hell a space-age upgrade. There are satanic symbols everywhere, including inverted crucifixes and pentagrams. There are flames and caves everywhere but also futuristic military style buildings.

The demons trying to kill you range from possessed human corpses to flaming skulls which fly through the air shrieking at you, to the biomechanical monstrosities like the Cyberdemon and the Spider Mastermind. Nowhere is safe in DOOM’s space-age version of hell. Maybe no one can hear you scream in space – but your neighbours will certainly hear you screaming as try over and over to make it through hell.
