10 Horror Video Game Sequels BETTER Than The Original

3. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly

The Fatal Frame series is a horror gaming masterpiece, but, unfortunately, it didn't sell as well in US markets as it did in Japan. Despite this, the focus on Japanese ghost folklore, and the fascinating combat mechanic, which saw you use a camera to defend yourself against your foes, was utterly unique and made the games incredibly tense.

There have been five mainline instalments, with the first three making up an impactful trilogy. However, it's the second entry that perfected the franchise and is still widely considered one of the scariest video games ever made.

Part of what makes Fatal Frame such a compelling franchise - as noted earlier - is the innovative combat. It sets you the task of waiting until just the right moment to score that Fatal Frame shot and in order to do so, you have to let the spirits and beasts get as close to you as possible.

Crimson Butterfly continued this fantastic gameplay but added in a thoroughly profound narrative to accompany the scares. It told the tale of a pair of twins named Mio and Mayu as they explored an abandoned village and uncovered an ancient ritual. The story went to some deeply emotional places and made the game even scarier than the last.
