10 Horror Video Game Sequels BETTER Than The Original
2. Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night
Symphony of the Night is an easy option for this list, as it's universally considered the strongest entry in its franchise. The Castlevania series is a beloved staple in the horror genre and was an early example of how the dark and macabre could translate to the gaming world. This sequel took everything learned in its prior iterations and perfected them.
The game took place four years after it's predecessor - Rondo of Blood - and gave you control over Dracula's Dhampir (half human, half vampire), son Alucard. Within the title, you explore and attempt to destroy Dracula's newly reappeared castle and try to bring down your father and the monsters inside.
Like many Castlevania games, it's filled with excellent platforming, strong boss-battles and a lavishly gothic presentation that keeps the player mesmerised.
One of the game's most significant selling points was its introduction of non-linear progression. You discovered the setting through organic exploration, uncovering magical items that helped you unlock new castle areas. This even ended up coining the term "Metroidvania" to reference the use of backtracking and exploration.
It changed the game enough, yet kept the spirit alive, making it a flawless sequel.
