For the top spot, one of the greatest franchises of all time, from a total genius mastermind in Hideo Kojima who delivers some of the best fan-pleasing content one minute, before actively liking to slap them in the face the next. Phantom Pain has a lot to prove this year, as although the 'prequel demo' Ground Zeroes was a brilliantly fun game, it just didn't last long enough. It seemed to provide a pretty good idea of exactly how PP is going to play though, and with features such as allowing you to take out guards as soon as they see you, the often-mentioned sense of 'playing MGS wrong' because you've ended up gunning everyone down can be rectified. Story-wise this is a prequel to the very first NES Metal Gear, taking place after the PSP-original Peace Walker (only Kojima would've sanctioned such a thing), but as such there's a pretty cool story to be told in exactly how the former hero Big Boss/Venom Snake really turns into the maniacal world-dominating mastermind seen in that aforementioned NES title. With Kojima admitting he's had to take some liberties with the series' timeline for the sake of telling a better story alongside some questionable adult themes sprinkled throughout an otherwise lighter action title, all eyes are on this to feel like a worthwhile instalment after the loose-end knotting MGS4 already finished everything off nicely.
