The indie game Firewatch was a surprise critical hit in early 2016, generating significant buzz for its story and character focused gameplay within a fairly unique premise. The game takes place in 1989 within the Shoshone National Forest in Wyoming, where you play as a fire lookout named Henry who gets drawn into a mysterious set of circumstances within the forest. His only constant communication is with his supervisor Delilah, and how you respond to her informs how their relationship develops over the course of the game.

It didn't take long for the developer Campo Santo to realize the potential for this story as a film, and so just this past September they announced that they would be partnering with production company Good Universe to make a feature film. Given that this was a very recent announcement, nothing else is known about the movie, but we do know that the deal includes heavy involvement with Campo Santo and will extend beyond just a Firewatch movie.

The real story here is that Firewatch isn't a giant mega million dollar action franchise, which will differentiate this film adaptation from almost every other video game based movie on the market. It suggests that there is a future for smaller scale, slow-paced video game movies, and that can only be a plus in a sub-genre that has yet to produce anything worthy of existing beyond merely capitalizing on an increasingly pessimistic fanbase.
