10 Hottest Video Game Movies Currently In Production - Ranked
8. Splinter Cell
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is one of the most recognizable names within the stealth game genre, so it's only natural that there has been talk of a film adaptation for quite a long time. Announcements go as far back as 2005, around the release of Chaos Theory, the Collector's Edition of which included an actual teaser trailer promising the film would be coming soon.
That obviously didn't happen. As is becoming increasingly common with these video game movies, pre-production issues have continued to hold it back from gaining any traction. Both Paramount Pictures and Dreamworks were attached at various points, but corporate buy outs halted progress.
However in 2012 it was announced that Tom Hardy, hot off the buzz of his performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, would be playing Sam Fisher. 2 years later The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman was hired to direct, stating that the film would be about a young Sam Fisher. A year later though, he dropped out, and once again production came to a grinding halt.
Now with Ubisoft having set up its own movie studio, they continue to insist that a Splinter Cell movie is still coming, with Tom Hardy still attached. Whether the film adaption ever sees the light of day probably depends on how successful the soon to be released Assassin's Creed film is, which will demonstrate the financial viability of big budget video game movies going forward.
