Minecraft just might be the biggest gaming sensation of all time; a franchise whose simple yet complex mechanics and pixelated art style has proved immensely popular across all age ranges. The franchise has made millions of dollars world wide, making the prospect of a film adaptation practically a given.

It was no surprise then when Minecraft creator Markus Alexej Persson revealed on Twitter that Mojang and Warner Bros. would be collaborating on Minecraft: The Movie. For a while Night of the Museum director Shawn Levy was hired to direct, but he ended up dropping out due to creative differences. Later at Minecon 2015, Rob McElhenney, mostly known for playing Mac in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, was revealed to be directing.

McElhenney is also co-writing the script with Jason Fuchs, writer of Ice Age: Continental Drift and Pan. Finally, just recently it was rumored that Steve Carrell is in negotiations to star, though this has yet to be confirmed. Slowly but surely the film is coming together, and is set to be released on May 24th, 2019.
