10 Huge Unresolved Mysteries In Mario Games

5. Are Mario 64's Paintings Real Places?

Super Mario 64 is consistently ranked amongst not only the best Mario games, but as one of the best games ever produced. And for good reason too. Mario 64 effectively set the template for an industry making its first, universal steps into 3D to follow, teaching everybody how to perfect control and camera in an open-world space.

But it wasn't just a technical demonstration; Mario 64 was fun too, not least in part thanks to the plethora of outstanding levels set around Princess Peach's castle. Diving around the castle's various rooms and into its many portraits has become iconic, with locations such as Bob-omb Battlefield, Jolly Roger Bay and Shifting Sand Land being amongst some of the most vibrant and interesting game levels ever designed.

It does lead to one big question however: are the places and locations Mario visits in Mario 64 real places, or simply a painting coming to life? The Princess slide, Rainbow Ride and Tick Tock Levels all seem to immerse you into the locations you find them in, however something like Tiny-Huge Island or Wet Dry World look like very alien in comparison to the Mushroom Kingdom, so who knows?
