10 Hugely Anticipated Video Game Sequels (That Probably Aren't Happening)

Hideki Kamiya is a strange enigma of a man. Cutting his teeth in a directorial debut on survival horror classic Resident Evil 2, he has gone to be known for crafting some of the best action games to come out of Japan (and for his never ending crusade of blocking people on Twitter).

Some of Kamiya’s most underrated works are the Viewtiful Joe games, a comic book style beat-em-up series with a lot of heart and buckets of wackiness and fourth wall breaking.

The short-lived series built a cult following with some speed but, ultimately, poor sales put the franchise on ice. Most painfully, this meant that the sequel’s cliffhanger has gone unanswered for 15 years.

At San Diego Comic-Con in 2016, Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi was asked about Viewtiful Joe and, after praising the work of his former colleague, admitted that it was pretty unlikely there would ever be another.

By this point, Kamiya had long since departed the company to work at Platinum Games. However, it seems that, like the fans, he hadn’t forgotten about his Viewtiful creation. In 2020, he admitted that he would love to finish the trilogy but that such decisions were out of his hands.
