10 Hugely Popular Licenses Video Games Can't Get Right
7. Doctor Who
Doctor Who is so extraordinarily popular nowadays that a video game based on the series was inevitable. Impressively, rather than ship the license out and hope for the best, the BBC actually published The Adventure Games themselves, ensuring an authentic experience. That's exactly what the games were too, thanks to Matt Smith and Karen Gillan voicing the Doctor and Amy Pond respectively throughout the series. The graphics are pretty good, as the cartoony style suits the program - so far, so good. The problem with The Adventure Games lies in the overly simplistic gameplay. Yes, this is a game for kids, but it doesn't need to be insultingly simple or repetitive. The gameplay lacks in inventiveness or imagination; considering how important Doctor Who has been to the sci-fi genre, that's really disappointing. There are also two Doctor Who games for Nintendo consoles but both have been panned dramatically. Return To Earth for the Wii is regarded as one of the worst games ever made and Evacuation Earth for the DS is a simple puzzle game with a Doctor Who logo branded on the front - not good. Still, both games sold surprisingly well and that shows the potential that a Doctor Who video game has. It would be challenging for a developer to make a game which challenged and entertained kids and adults alike but if the television series can manage it, it shouldn't be an impossible task.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
