5. Killzone: Shadow Fall
MetaCritic Score: 74 I was one of the many gamers avidly refreshing the MetaCritic page on the day the PS4 review embargo broke, and I was paying particular attention to one of my pre-orders, Killzone: Shadow Fall. Though well reviewed for sure, it settled for a solid if not spectacular 74 rating, with critics praising the superb presentation and multiplayer, while decrying the scant story and thin characterisation. Shadow Fall was also the first next-gen game to cross the 1 million sales barrier, so the game is certainly not a failure by any means. However, it is underrated. Having blasted through the single player mode and spent countless hours racking up those challenges in multiplayer, I was left scratching my head as to why the game didn't amass a score in the 80s or even the 90s. The fiendishly addictive online would itself be worth throwing down £40 for, but the stunning solo offering is the first game I played to truly make me appreciate next-gen tech. It might not have much emotional resonance, but it's a visceral, thunderous shooter, and easily the best next-gen game I've played so far.
