10 Iconic Video Game Mascots That Don't Matter Anymore
6. Solid Snake
Once upon a time, in the late '90s and early 2000s, Solid Snake was one of the biggest video mascots in the world. However, time has been least kind to Snake, and, put simply, he does not matter anymore as the future of the Metal Gear franchise is up in the air.
Solid Snake has one of the most confusing backstories in pop culture involving cloning, mistaken identity and a whole host of differing personalities from Big Boss to Venom Snake. Perhaps the franchise's rich lore is a reason for Solid Snake's lack of current relevance as new gamers to the series, those that jumped on the bandwagon with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015, may have been left scratching their head.
Despite The Phantom Pain being critically acclaimed, it was actually received poorly by loyal fans of the original. It's been called out for its repetitive and unimaginative gameplay and its lack of true relevance in connection to the previous games.
Now, with the split between Konami and Hideo Kojima, the future of Metal Gear is unclear with any future instalments or remakes rumoured but unconfirmed. Thus, Solid Snake will remain a mascot stuck in the past.
