10 Iconic Video Games That NEED A Remake

3. Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy Ix
Square Enix

I scrawl my name on the fictional petition marked 'Remake Final Fantasy IX You Bastards' with equal parts glee and caution.

On the one hand, it's the best instalment in the franchise (and I can say that with a clear conscience because Final Fantasy VII is, hand on heart, my *favourite* game of all time, but I can still pull my head out of my own hoop long enough to recognise that IX is still the objectively superior game), on the other hand I don't trust them to do it.

Let's be clear, the Final Fantasy VII remake bodes both well and terribly for IX. It tells us that Square are open to remaking these beloved properties, but it also tells us that they want to chuck out a lot of what made them great. We've seen the clips, the screens, the previews, and the only connections they have to the original game are cosmetic. I mean, look at the state of this.

Will it be a bit of a let down? Probably. Will I still play it anyway? Oh god, absolutely. But let's just dream for a moment and believe, in our stupid hearts, that you take away the old mechanics and the ATB system and it's somehow great. Let's say the narrative is still just as impactful, the characters as well developed and the world as wonderfully fleshed out as it was. Let's say it works, somehow. Square would be crazy to not then put IX - and VIII in fairness - into development too.

When we'd ever actually get any of those though is another matter entirely...
