3. Docking At Shadow Moses (Metal Gear Solid)

When giddy gamers got their mitts on that monthly Official PlayStation Magazine demo disc in 1998, it was usually a joyous experience. Whereas games like Gran Turismo, Tekken 3 and Spyro The Dragon offered up racing, fighting and cartoon goodness in succession, they couldn't match Metal Gear Solid's sweeping production values.

Almost a decade before opening scenes like the one from Bioshock were commonplace, Konami's mastermind Hideo Kojima was bringing silver screen wizardry to Sony's machine. He did it all with an opening salvo of codec conversations, unheard of stealth mechanics and a lead character so gruff he made Arnie look like Liberace.

Infiltrating the Shadow Moses facility and talking tactics with Colonel Campbell (before taking on the renegade forces of FOXHOUND) remains one of the original PlayStation's most effective experiences. Though it wasn't open world like MGS V and hadn't yet gone off the wall as a series, those first minutes of Metal Gear action will never lose their potency.
