10 Improvements The New Gears Of War Needs To Have

10. Less Bros, More Scares

If you compare Gears of War 3 with Gears of War, there's a stark difference between the two. The last numbered game in the franchise may have looked like Gears 1, but in reality, this was a very different beast altogether. Whereas Gears 1 was dripping with atmosphere, legitimate threats in the form of the Locust and a sense of foreboding at every turn, Gears 3 was a balls-to-the-wall comrade-centric adventure where you and your unstoppable chums mowed down the Locust horde and absolutely nothing stood in your way. In other words, it was a massive departure from what made the first (and second) games so great. Where was the section where you dodged the Kryll as they chopped you to bits in the darkness? Where was the highly tense section where you were attacked by hideous creatures kept in tanks in a massive and mysterious abandoned research station? Gears 3 had nothing like this, relying instead on mechs and team-based gameplay. Can you remember how you felt the first time you ever encountered a Berserker and had to actually think about your tactics? The tension was ridiculous. You had to lead a virtually unstoppable monster through a labyrinth inside a decaying building, not knowing when and where it would attack. It was memorable, scary in the right way and painted the Locust as a legitimate threat with countless enemies that we knew nothing about and had to adapt to in order to survive. Gears 3 had none of these moments and neither did the largely forgettable Judgment. I firmly believe that the Gears series needs to delve into its roots to see what was done right, develop upon it and create something marvelous.
