10 INCREDIBLE PS2 Games You Still Need To Play
7. Drakengard
Perhaps best known for being the game that eventually spawned the equally strange Nier series, the Drakengard games have fallen into moderate obscurity in recent years.
For its time, Drakengard was a bit of an oddity, combining three very different styles of gameplay into a surprisingly cohesive package, blending genres and tones with ease and offering up a very unique experience for players. The constant shift from ground-based hack-and-slash combat to aerial battles aboard dragons made for an exhilarating good time, acting as the progenitor to Nier: Automata's own brand of genre-bending fisticuffs.
Narratively, the Drakengard series is fairly dense, full of well-rounded characters and plenty of twists, turns and shocking moments that reward those who can keep up with it, but for the most part its the stellar combat that will keep you playing.
A sequel and a prequel are also available for the PS2 and PS3, but with its deep (and somewhat confusing) narrative, we'd advise starting with the original to get a firm grasp on what this series is all about. If you're a recent convert to the Nier series, you should definitely check this one out.
