The Silver Lining is an episode sequel, based on the popular King’s Quest series. The latest episode – Tis in My Memory Locked. And You Yourself Shall Hold The Key – picks right up after the conclusion of the last game, and was released almost five years ago.

Phoenix Online Studies planned to release the final chapter at some point next year after years of setbacks and delays, but have since stopped working on the project, releasing all rights to Activision.

In the game, players assume the role of long-time protagonist, Graham, tasked with uncovering the identity of a mysterious, cloaked assailant responsible for casting a powerful spell on Rosella and Alexander, rendering them unconscious. The game – a classic point-and-click adventure – returns the series to its roots, reverting the changes made by the previous instalment – The Mask of Eternity – which introduced a number of changes, including innovative role-playing elements, most of which were rejected adamantly by players.

Following an official announcement, the development team were sent a cease-and-desist, eventually negotiating terms allowing them to continue working on the project. Unfortunately, Vivendi Games – having merged with Activision – almost immediately revoked their non-license agreement with Phoenix, preventing the company from continued their work. Currently, there are no plans to finish the game.

That said, the first four chapters are already available online, and are well worth your time if you happen to be a fan of the series.
