10 Incredibly Calm Moments In Otherwise Intense Games
2. Battleship Bay Bioshock Infinite
The visceral and bloody nature of Bioshock Infinite's combat invariably places a great deal of relevance on the game's more gentle moments. The contrast that exists between setting a murder of crows on an enemy and taking a stroll on a seaside boardwalk situated on a floating city is really quite staggering. It lends a great deal of significance to these glimpses of serenity, allowing us time to simply exist in the world without being driven to act by violence or self-preservation. This moment takes place shortly after freeing Elizabeth, the player's newfound companion, from her prison on Monument Island. We awake after a turbulent encounter with a ginormous mechanical creature called the Songbird, only to find ourselves on the idyllic shores of Battleship Bay, a beautifully realised beach area complete with an arcade, boardwalk and simulated ocean. Watching Elizabeth, a young woman who has spent most of her life indoors, enjoying this new world is utterly captivating and quickly cements the attachment that we, as players, make with her character.
