10 Industry-Defining Video Games That Are Nowhere To Be Seen
8. Left 4 Dead
As far as zombie survival games go - and there are a lot of them around - the Left 4 Dead series has it pretty much nailed down. The environments are claustrophobic and crowded, the combat is visceral and satisfying (especially the melee weapons), and theres a lot of panicked shouting because you have to rely on teamwork to survive.
Sure, there are probably better shooters to play on your own, but L4D stands out because it's just so gosh darned fun to play with friends. Fighting off hordes of hungry zombies with a sledgehammer, the absolute terror of startling a Witch, laughing as one of your mates is slowly pummelled into dust by a Tank - what more could you want?
Even better, the versus mode introduces the special zombies as playable characters in an alternative game mode, giving players a legitimate reason to screw each other over. Which you will do. A lot.
The series still retains a loyal online fanbase, despite being relatively dated by today's standards (L4D2 came out in 2009), but there has been relatively little indication other than rumour that the series will ever be returned to for future games. A sequel, or even a remastering and graphical update, would likely be well received by fans.
