10 Industry-Defining Video Games That Are Nowhere To Be Seen

7. Prince Of Persia

The Prince of Persia series is one of those titles that falls under the ambiguous 'action-adventure' genre, as indeed there is a lot of action and much adventuring, with some clever puzzles thrown in for good measure. The series is perhaps best known now for the Sands of Time trilogy, which in particular routinely finds itself on peoples' "Best Game" lists.

The combat is actually more like a hack-and-slash, with the titular Prince usually fighting a horde of enemies at any one time, and so does get a little repetitive at times. But there's so much more than the combat - the platforming is intuitive and flows effortlessly into the more close encounters, as does the time-reversal mechanic. The environments are stunning, and there is some pretty great characterisation of the main heroes, something that all too often goes amiss.

Those three titles - The Sands of Time, Warrior Within and The Two Thrones - are absolute must plays for any gamer and are some of the best games ever released, never mind of their era. Despite the series' success, the Prince has only seen one fully-fledged sequel/reboot (excluding the later movie tie in) released in 2008 to modest acclaim. If another instalment could recapture the essence of the previous games, there's no doubt it would be a hit.
