10 Industry-Defining Video Games That Are Nowhere To Be Seen

6. Jak And Daxter

Naughty Dog

Jak and Daxter is difficult series to describe, because it does a little bit of everything, but unlike a lot of other games with token elements or mechanics, it actually does everything well. It's a third-person sandbox shooter with driving elements, platforming, puzzles and the occasional beat 'em up using superpowers. A bit like GTA V, 10 years beforehand.

Obviously, when you want to progress there are linear story missions, but those are almost an afterthought and take a back seat to traversing the huge world around you. The driving mechanics in Jak 3 are tight and intuitive - it feels like it could almost be a racing game all on its own, something Naughty Dog thought themselves when they released Jak X in 2005.

Jak and Daxter is just one of those series that just about everyone who had a console in the mid 2000s played. Unfortunately, it never quite managed the transition into future console generations, although not because of a lack of demand from fans. The most recent iteration was the PS2's Jak and Daxter: The Lost FrontierĀ in 2009; so maybe there'll be a nice Jak-shaped surprise waiting for us in the near future, though Naughty Dog aren't giving anything away.
