10 Insane Alternate Video Game Sequels You Won't Believe Got Cancelled

2. Mass Effect Andromeda - Hundreds Of Different Planets

Mass Effect: Andromeda, quite literally, had galaxy-size potential. Unshackled by the weight of continuing the story of Commander Shepard, or even making a story set in the Milky Way, Andromeda, like its title suggests, moved the action to a whole new galaxy, essentially giving the developers the opportunity to do anything they wanted.

Sadly, what they did was simply more Mass Effect.

It wasn't always supposed to be that way though, and the original idea was to put the emphasis on exploration and old-school sci-fi adventure, with players travelling to uncharted planets around this new galaxy, each with their own unique habitats, cultures, and aliens.

The scope of the project was massive, with a No Man's Sky-style system that would procedurally generate hundreds of unique planets. Considering the final game shipped with under 10, you might be wondering what the hell happened.

Well, the full process has been documented in this great Kotaku piece, but the short answer is Andromeda's ambitions had to be reigned in thanks to a toxic cocktail of mismanagement and an unintuitive game engine. The final release didn't live up to the initial vision, even if the exploration elements are still the best thing about the sequel.
