10 Insane Alternate Video Game Sequels You Won't Believe Got Cancelled

3. Rainbow Six: Patriots - A Single-Player Focused Shooter

Despite being popular, the Rainbow Six series became a bit of a problem for Ubisoft during the Xbox 360 era. The Vegas games were successes, but with Call of Duty and other military games reaching ridiculous heights and the studio moving to focus on open-world experiences, Rainbow Six needed a fresh lick of paint.

What they came up with was Patriots, a story-driven game with a focus on scripted set-pieces. The sequel was announced in 2011 with a flashy trailer that made it clear this was going to be a grounded, gritty, Rainbow Six game with real characters at the forefront. You know, the same approach pretty much every first-person shooter took at the time.

The main issue was the game was bound by old technology and a lack of creative vision, which led to its eventual cancellation. Opting to throw everything out and start fresh, the multiplayer-only Siege began development in its place, delivering fans a Rainbow Six game they didn't know they needed.

Siege is one of the best multiplayer games of the generation, yet single-player fans no doubt lament the sacrifice of Patriots' narrative drive.
