10 Insane Alternate Video Game Sequels You Won't Believe Got Cancelled

1. Doom 4 - Hell On Earth

Doom 4, perhaps suitably, was stuck in development hell for years. Announced quickly after the release of Doom 3, news on the follow up was sparse for years, with the only concrete details being that the game was taking the action from Mars to Earth. That transition made sense: if the third game was a reimagining of the first, then this would offer another take on Hell on Earth.

Thanks to footage released from this abandoned project and interviews with developers, it's been revealed that this fourth game would have moved even further away from the series' roots, making you part of a squad and traversing through linear levels a la Call of Duty. The apocalyptic setting does look hauntingly beautiful, but the slower gunplay is a far cry from the fast-paced combat chess fans were already missing in Doom 3.

Different iterations were thrown around for about seven years, until Id Software went back to the drawing board to craft a full reboot with 2016's Doom. The franchise is better than it's ever been, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to play a proper follow up to Doom 3.
