10 Insane Video Game Mechanics You Won't Believe Are Real
3. Wolf Urine - Metal Gear Solid
Hideo Kojima has always had so many ideas that every title he's released has been stuffed with amazing bits of trivia. The original Metal Gear Solid has plenty too. Many of these, such as Psycho Mantis' controller-moving antics, have become the stuff of legend. Some however, are sorely overlooked.
In the caves of Shadow Moses Island, Snake comes across a family of wolves who will attack him on sight if he’s not careful. If you’re feeling particularly ruthless you can fight back and kill the animals, which will prompt Otacon to give you the silent treatment. However, there is one little trick to getting by without needing to animal cruelty that changes the entire encounter.
If you hit Snake’s companion Meryl whilst in this cave, she will order the adolescent wolf to attack you. But if you drop a box over Snake’s head and hide, the canine won’t be able to find you and will instead urinate on the box. And wolf whizz is apparently some pretty potent stuff, as your box of choice will smell like it for the rest of the game.
Why is this a good thing? Well, now you can safely bypass the wolves by wearing the box who will take one sniff and think you’re one of their own.
Pretty sneaky, Snake.
