7. The Suffering (2004) - Bloodied Clothes

x-men origins
Midway Games

Set within a prison overrun with hellish monsters, underrated action-horror The Suffering takes the psychological horror of Silent Hill and throws in gallons bloody violence to make for one of the more intriguing games of the 2000s.

Playing as mute protagonist Torque (who’s imprisoned for allegedly murdering his wife and children), this horror outing has a variety of interesting ideas at play. There was a morality system that would determine what ending players would get based on the decisions they made throughout the game, Torque could transform into a monster for a limited time, and a spattering of ominous world-building made for a mysterious and enthralling setting.

One further detail that developers Surreal Software added was that Torque would become covered in blood whenever he got up close and personal to the grotesque monsters during combat. Especially noticeable at the start of the game when he's equipped with only a knife, his vest will become increasingly blood-spattered with each attack. Shooting enemies at a distant, however, will keep his clothes clean.

Although the blood effects will gradually fade over time, their appearance is an immersive detail that serves to remind just how grim The Suffering's world is.
