Star Wars: Battlefront may be the victim of a host of problems that hold it back from greatness, but there is no denying its effectiveness in the moment. When it fires on all cylinders the game is a Star Wars fan’s dream come true, and this is especially the case in regards to the Hoth map, which brings the original trilogy’s most memorable battle to life with greater detail and breadth than any Star Wars game before it.

Yes, it is a strictly multiplayer experience, but that arguably makes it better, as it makes the action feel more spontaneous and chaotic. Between the armies of soldiers charging each other, lasers whizzing by your head, aerial engagements in the sky, and the relentless bombardment of the AT-ATs, there is so much going on. All of it, especially the visual and audio design, is so beautifully realized that it’s tempting to just stop and marvel at the mayhem.

Hoth is Star Wars: Battlefield at its best. It feels like a real battle, albeit one set in a fictional sci-fi/fantasy universe, and that’s what makes it such great action. It’s spectacle; fun and exciting, at least initially, and even if you eventually grow bored of it, there’s no denying the initial fun to be had.
