10 Legend Of Zelda Secrets You Still Haven’t Discovered

7. The Secret Ending (Link's Awakening)

One of Nintendo's greatest accomplishments to date is cramming the Zelda formula onto a humble Game Boy cart with few concessions. Link's Awakening obviously wasn't as colourful as its console forbears, but it was full-fat Zelda nonetheless.

There was plenty to see and do on Koholint, the island Link found himself washed up on in the handheld spinoff, and there was even a secret ending for players to discover, though only elite Zelda experts got to see it.

Link's Awakening's alternate ending will only play out if you complete the game without dying, which is no easy feat considering that means negotiating eight trap-filled dungeons, defeating nine main bosses and besting a handful of mini-dungeons and never seeing the words 'game over'.

Whether the actual ending itself is worth all the blood, sweat and tears is debatable. It's basically an extended version of the original ending, but when Link looks up to the heavens, he sees a winged Marin flying across the screen.

In the DX version of Link's Awakening on Game Boy Color, he sees an image of her face followed by a bird flying off towards the horizon, which is presumed to be Marin.
