10 Lengthy Video Games That Were Absolutely Obliterated By Speedrunners
8. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is by far the biggest and most expansive game in the series. Its focus is on open-world operations, allowing the player a huge amount of tactical options and manners with which to engage the enemy against the settings of Afghanistan and Africa.
Many players have commented that it typically takes upwards of fifty hours just to reach the end of the story mode. This is down to both the slower-paced stealth gameplay and the sheer amount of content on offer. The main missions always take place in the sprawling environments which can take minutes to traverse.
On top of this you've also got to wait through helicopter rides and other methods of insertion, during which the player has no means of speeding up outside of upgrade purchases. Not only do you need to master the game's mechanics, there's also a heap of micro-management with Mother Base development to contend with.
With so many missions, side objectives and collectables, it's astonishing that some are able to do everything in under five hours. Somehow, both Steg Darkhorse and the European Speedrunner Assembly were able to slice the game down to four hours or less. Typically, this would be the requirement for the Big Boss rank in previous games, but here it's a monstrous achievement.
