10 Lost Video Game Characters You Didn't Realise Came Back
5. Rad Spencer In Bionic Commando (Reboot)
When I told one of my friends “oh, no, they actually did make another Bionic Commando game”, I was met with an excited gasp... followed by a confused grimace when I showed him pictures of the reboot.
”Why dreadlocks, though?!”, he snorted. “Of all the things, dreadlocks.”
To Capcom’s defense though, 2009 was around the time when cartoonish, fun-looking protagonists were out, and desaturated ball bearing-chewing scowly men with dark pasts were the soup of the day, so it’s probably not unreasonable to have thought that this Bionic Commando was a totally different franchise entirely.
This is further exacerbated by Bionic Commando always being about an upbeat, plucky hero in his attempt to literally kill alternate universe Hitler, so when they decided to bring Rad back as a gritty antihero betrayed by his government and falsely imprisoned, it seemed tonally at odds with what made Bionic Commando so charming.
Of course, if they’d gone completely tongue-in-cheek with the game - particularly with the reboot’s biggest surprise - that your bionic arm is actually partially made of... er... your missing wife (insert joke about how my right hand is my lover, too) the game could’ve possibly carried more of the original’s identity.
