10 Major Problems With 2018's Biggest Video Games
7. Spider-Man Is Playing It Too Safe
Spidey certainly looks glossy enough, and with Insomniac at the helm I'm sure it'll play just fine - but is there anything new here that we haven't seen before?
A few quickfire context prompts have Spidey bringing in parts of the environment to clobber foes, sure, but for the vast majority of the two gameplay demos we've seen, this looks to be aping the Arkham series to a fault. Hiding in designated contextual spots, fighting enemies with "watch for the icon" combat and indulging in quick-time events for the biggest set-pieces - it's all going to play well enough, but when this is THE big exclusive Spider-Man game on PS4, it's falling short in the gameplay department.
Here's hoping there's something more to the swinging mechanics or overall feel of hurtling Spidey through New York than what we've had for the last decade-plus, because if not, this isn't going to land in anywhere near the same way as Rocksteady's 2009 masterpiece.
