10 Masterpiece Video Games You DIDN'T Play

8. Deadly Premonition

Deadly Premonition Agent Morgan
Koei Tecmo

In Deadly Premonition, you play a psychic detective. The weird thing is... that's the least weird part of this game.

Even though this survival horror title serves as an obvious love letter to surreal noir stories like Twin Peaks, people couldn't make heads or tails of it when it hit shelves. Half the critics said it was a piece of art, while the other half said it was a piece of... something else. Because the reviews were split right down the middle, most gamers didn't bother with it.

The truth is Deadly Premonition is not a great game. However, it is also not a bad game. It is, very simply, an acquired taste. You see, Deadly Premonitions problem isn't the gameplay or the mechanics. The problem is everything else.

A lot of people who played it couldn't stand the cheesy dialogue, over-the-top characters, and the unnatural acting. However, there are just as many people who LOVE this style. If you enjoy stories that feel otherworldly or hypnagogic, Deadly Premonition will feel tailor-made for you. If you are a fan, have a look at Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing In Disguise, which is just as bizarre and polarising.
