10 Masterpiece Video Games You DIDN'T Play

4. Dragon Quest V

Deadly Premonition Agent Morgan
Chunsoft

The hype for Chunsoft's Dragon Quest V wasn't just big - it was borderline mythical.

This SNES title was so highly coveted, it sold over a million copies in its first day.

Upon its debut, there were reports of people queueing up to three miles to get a copy. There were at least ten incidents of thieves breaking into retail stores to steal it. It was so successful in Japan, it even outsold Street Fighter II!!

This DragonQuestmania also inspired Nintendo to increase the price of the console, knowing people were buying the SNES purely to purchase this fabled RPG.

Although it's common knowledge that successful games in Japan don't always do well worldwide, it looked like this beloved sequel was set to become a global phenomenon.

Sadly, the SNES version of DQV was never released outside of Asia. What's worse is that it's still difficult to find 30 years later.

Although Chunsoft's magnum opus was rereleased on the DS in 2009, it's never been available on home consoles outside Japan. Even though the franchise's sequels and spin-offs are available on pretty much every console you could imagine, few people have played the crown jewel of the series.
