10 Mind-Blowing Video Game Plot Twists Nobody Saw Coming

7. You Are The Bad Guy In Braid

As mentioned previously, playing the bad guy without knowing is a twist that has been used plenty of times in video games. It continues to be used because it can still provide gamers with that genuine feeling of shock and confusion when it is done correctly. If the player is truly not expecting such a revelation, it can still be quite memorable, even if it has been done before. That is the case with indie smash hit Braid. Featuring gorgeous 2D graphics and a clever and engaging time-warping mechanic, this little puzzler was supposed to engage your brain, not your heart. At a glance, the story looked like a standard €œprotagonist saves princess from villain€ scenario. In this case, the protagonist is Tim, the princess is€uh, a princess€and the villain is an evil knight. At least, that€™s how it looks at first. As the game rolls on, more and more bits of the story are revealed and, as it turns out, Tim and the princess didn€™t have quite the idyllic relationship. Finally, during the last level, time progresses forward while reversing all of Tim€™s actions, allowing us to see the real truth: all of the obstacles and the traps that Tim had to evade €“ the princess placed them there. She wasn€™t kidnapped, she was rescued by the €œevil€ knight€ from you!
