10 Mind-Blowing Video Game Plot Twists Nobody Saw Coming
4. Playing As A Templar In Assassins Creed III
The Assassins Creed franchise has a pretty convoluted storyline and most would argue that it jumped the shark completely as soon as it introduced aliens into the mix. Even the whole using the Animus in the present storyline is, for the most part, unnecessary. Who actually enjoys playing as Desmond, anyway? Despite its faults, the series had a genuinely clever and unexpected plot twist at the beginning of Assassins Creed III. Here you are playing as slick and debonair 18th century Englishman Haytham Kenway, a clever, agile and deadly man who is clearly working for one secret society while being hunted by another. The obvious leap for anyone to make is that he is an assassin being tracked down by the templars. He makes the trip from England to America and quickly recruits an interesting gallery of quirky characters to help him accomplish his mission. At one point, they take a moment to integrate one of the new guys into their society and here is where you learn that they were actually templars. Yup, youve been playing as the bad guy. Its a technique thats been done before in games, but this one was genuinely surprising. You could tell the developers were reveling in their trickery by the achievement/trophy unlocked after this scene titled How Dya Like Them Apples. Unfortunately, this could also be said to be the highlight of the game. Afterwards you play as a blander, less interesting character and it all goes downhill from there.
