Resident Evil had evolved considerably since its inception two decades ago, each instalment developing upon the experience significantly, evolving the concept gradually throughout the years. Resident Evil 4 for instance, introduced a third person perspective, shifting the series’ emphasis away from survival horror, and accentuating gunplay more so than ever before.

Likewise, the fifth instalment introduced co-operative play, further distancing the franchise from its roots, developing the formula for an all new generation of players.

By comparison, the sixth instalment – appropriately titled, Resident Evil 6 – also innovated, only in a way which was completely detrimental to the series. For one thing, it wasn’t a survival horror game. It was essentially a thinly veiled cover shooter, and honestly, it barely managed to accomplish even that.

Not to mention the story, which was an absolute mess, comprised of countless characters with separate motivations, all scattered throughout the globe.

In addition, the game is exceptionally long, and remarkably shallow. It’s not challenging, and it’s not scary. Arguably, it’s the most accessible of the franchise, but the larger plot is incomprehensible, as well as completely dependent on previous instalments, so it ends up appealing to practically no one.
