Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle was a massive disappointment, commercially and critically. In the game, players assume the role of the titular protagonist, tasked with rescuing his father from the fictional planet, Paperrock.

The game features 2D, side-scrolling gameplay, and was heavily criticised for its floaty controls and random, unpredictable rock, paper, scissors gameplay mechanic, which appeared frequently throughout the game and involved zero strategy.

The fifth instalment in the franchise, the game represented the penultimate entry in the series. In 1990, the series was put to rest completely following a final attempt to revive the classic series, which ultimately failed.

It’s a shame, considering the fact that the series has never been able to bounce back, but The Enchanted Castle really was a disappointing chore, complete with inaccurate collision detection and random, inescapable minigames segments.

Ultimately, the series never recovered, the character downgraded from the mascot of the company to an unlockable character in numerous SEGA party-games, including Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing and Sega Superstars Tennis.
