1. Yoshimo's "Betrayal" - Baldur's Gate II: Shadows Of Amn

Opinion varies wildly on who the best companions are in Baldur's Gate II, though a sure fan-favourite is bounty hunter Yoshimo - up to a point, at least.

Yoshimo can be recruited to your party early in the game, enough that you'll probably grow rather attached to him by the time he's forced to betray the player under the control of the villainous mage Jon Irenicus.

This happens roughly two-thirds of the way through the campaign, and beyond the devastation of a character you've spent dozens of hours warming to being turned to the dark side, if you didn't know it was coming you've just lost everything he had equipped.

Those who know what awaits Yoshimo, however, will typically strip him of his wares before the betrayal takes place.

And because this isn't savage enough, Yoshimo will later ask you to kill him in order to set him free from Irenicus' enchantment, and he can only be granted peace in the afterlife by taking his heart to a priest.

Very cruel indeed.
