8. Enslaved: Odyssey To The West

People often cite Beyond Good and Evil as a cult classic in narrative and adventure, but I will always fly the flag for the even lesser appreciated Enslaved. A futuristic retelling (kind of) of the old Chinese tale, Journey to the West, it was an ambitious take that just didn't pay off in the long run for Ninja Theory.

Which is a shame, because at its heart, it's a beautiful action-adventure game, with strong performances from Andy Serkis and Lindsey Shaw, as Monkey and Trip[itaka] respectively. Bound together by strained circumstances, the two unlikely companions work together to return to Trip's village. This naturally frames what becomes the proverbial journey, across some beautiful landscapes and setpieces, mixed with a great combat system and varied bosses.

It had a bit of a mixed message in its ending, and despite critical reception, failed to set the charts alight. Ninja Theory have gone on to do bigger and better things, seemingly leaving Enslaved as a one-and-done. If you do have a PS3, Xbox 360 or gaming PC, it's worth a look.
