Following in the ironically flowery footsteps of forgotten Dreamcast platformer Napple Tale: Arsia in Dreamday, a game created with a "feminine sensibility" through its mostly female development team, came 2009's Action Girlz Racing, which looked to do much the same for the 'abysmal knock-off Mario Kart' genre.

The first thing you notice about the box is that it's pink. Very pink. And adorned all over the shop with clip-art love hearts. That's just what girls like, right? It must be: the blurb boasts that Action Girlz is 'the only Racing (sic) game designed by Girls (sic, again) for girls!

If a group of female developers reckon the perpetuation of retrograde gender stereotypes is what girls want, so be it. The slight issue here is that the claim on the box is complete and utter tosh; the game was actually made by an almost entirely male team, who simply used female aliases in its credits. Turns out that what men pretending to be girls think girls want is the slowest and frankly sh*ttest Mario Kart clone ever.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
