Although it was originally a contentious decision, going fully open world was the best thing that the Zelda franchise could have ever done. Transforming its style of play while retaining the essence and classic mechanics of the series, Breath of the Wild revolutionised the franchise for a brand new console generation, giving Nintendo a killer app for their new system.
With the ability to spend hundreds of hours in the beautifully rendered world of Hyrule, Nintendo were able to capture the magic of freely exploring a rich sandbox without bogging it down with too much busywork or repetition.
There was a sense of childlike wonder while playing Breath of the Wild that few contemporary games are able to capture, and just being able to exist in this world for a hundred hours was pure fantasy escapism at its finest.
