Fortnite battle royale
Epic

Literally seeing Epic games take note of Bluehole's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and replicating the base gameplay, Fortnite challenges you to survive a 100 player "battle royale".

The mode derives its name from the 2001 Japanese flick of the same title, though here, 100 players sky-dive down onto an island and have to find weapons or play it stealthy to survive. Team tactics can come and go out the window as you attempt to forge allegiances or get the drop on others - all in all, it's "who dares, wins", but on a really unique scale.

There's also the small matter of the shrinking play area, too, forcing everyone together at regular intervals.

What Fortnite loses by being a more cartoonish affair in comparison to PUBG's militaristic feel, it more than makes up for with custom building controls and the ability to fortify cover all around, meaning if you need to, building a base and hunkering down - or laying down some traps - can be a worthwhile strategy.

Because it's one death and you're done, Fortnite is built to capitalise on that "Just one more try..." mentality to a perfection.
