Another N64 entry, Mario Kart 64 took everything the SNES title, Super Mario Kart, was and turned it up to 11. There’s actually less tracks overall on Mario Kart 64 and still only four battle maps but the improved 3D graphics and infinite replay value just tip the balance in the favour of the N64 title.

A few features from Super Mario Kart were scrapped such as the concept of lives being lost should the racer not finish within the top four of a race and computer opponents having special abilities during races without collecting power-ups: wise moves as it turns out.

Once you’d played through all the GPs, you were given the option of the ‘Extra’ mode where tracks were inverted for added difficulty and even more enjoyment – even by yourself this was a seriously addictive game but there was another element that made it all the more enjoyable.

Mario 64’s battle mode may have been limited in terms of courses but four player support and the ability to get some revenge on the player who took you out as a driveable bomb was truly magnificent. If you haven’t played four player Mario Kart 64 on a huge, modern television – you are missing out big time.
