8. The Last Of Us
Very rarely does the BBC grip you with its nature documentaries (unless you happen to be me). In this case though, The Last of Us was allegedly directly inspired by the popular documentary Planet Earth. The plot of the game does indeed follow the documentary, whereby the idea of a cordycep fungus wrecking havoc, inspired Naughty Dog to go ahead and make a game out of it. It seems like a stupid common zombie-blasting, post-apocalyptic game. Unsurprisingly though, it's not. Naughty Dog is best known for its Uncharted series, which pretty much is one of the best gaming/cinematic experiences one could have. By the looks of it, The Last of Us is no different. The main plot as mentioned before, revolves around a dystopian future, where the cordycep fungus has claimed the lives of millions, and has mother nature reclaiming our cities. Throw in an anti-hero dubbed Joel (AKA Dad), and his teenage daughter Ellie, both trying to escape the harsh martial law set by the US Military, to a resistance group (there always seems to be one, doesn't there?) known as the Fireflies. Add this to the fact that there are human-esque creatures lurking around every corner to try and spread the fungus, along with scavengers and military, and you've got one big hurdle to get over. This then, is not another mindless zombie game, but rather a game which explores complex issues such as Father-Daughter relationships.
The gameplay will likely be somewhat like Uncharted if you've played it before, with some performance tweaks such as the new AI system Naughty Dog are touting as 'Balance of Power'. This coupled with brilliant graphics is what makes me wish I was playing the game right now instead of writing this article. It seems like a blessing then, that neither you nor I will have to wait much longer. The Last of Us is going to be released worldwide on the June 14th 2013. Unfortunately for Xbox 360 or PC users though, this, just like Uncharted, is a Playstation exclusive. You can however, watch the gameplay demo on loop, and pretend you are playing it... If you're the kind of person who likes BBC nature documentaries, I am legend or even if you like Left 4 Dead and Uncharted, this game will not disappoint. This is definitely a must-have for anyone
