8. Energy Sword - Halo 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8UkzvYSbbA&t=0m39s The Energy Sword that was introduced in Halo 2 is easily one of the best melee weapons in the history of gaming, transforming Halo from an excellent military-style sci-fi shooter into one that also had some more intimate brutality under its belt, as you were able to cut through foe after foe with this beastly bit of kit. Though the decision to have you playing as a Covenant for half the game didn't exactly go down swimmingly with all players, at least we were wielding an Energy Sword for a good deal of the time, and it boasts a melee attack that's far superior to Master Chief's own gun-butt in the face. This weapon went from awesome to transcendental if you ever took Halo 2 online, though. Unbound by the same restrictions as the single player offering, anyone could gain possession of these weapons online, making for some of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had in an online game, especially during "Energy Swords only" games. What really distinguishes the weapon is its awesome lunge capability, meaning that you can hone in on an enemy, and as soon as your reticule turns red, you can leap forward, cutting them down in one fell swoop. Amazing.
