10 Most Controversial Video Games Rated 'Adults Only' In America

3. Manhunt 2

"Manhunt 2" was the sequel to the better-received "Manhunt" which many critics agreed wasn't anything to write home about, but had its moments. It also is one of the few games in existence to be assigned an Adults Only rating based purely on violence (a "Punisher" game was threatened with the rating before they toned-down some of the brutal kills). A big sticking point seemed to be that the Wii version of the game had you using the controller as if you were simulating the violent actions the character was doing onscreen, and while hitting a button to chop somebody with an axe gets you a Mature rating, apparently actually swinging your Wiimote down is a step too far for the ESBRB. There was outcry from parents and politicians at the thought of their child stabbing people on the Wii (never-mind parents should know better than to give their 5 year-old a game with, "Manhunt," in the title) and it became a big ruckus. Hoping to still be able to release the game on consoles, developer and publisher Rockstar blurred-out the goriest parts of the game, cut some especially objectionable content, and just barely squeaked by with an M rating. Unfortunately, when editing the game they didn't make any alterations that actually improved it beyond being a dull slog.
