2. Kingdom Come: Deliverance

A remarkably rewarding, old-school RPG that gives Bethesda and Elder Scrolls a run for their money, Kingdom Come is set in 1600s Bohemia, but the twist is: Everything is entirely real-world accurate.

Rather unfortunately, despite the game having a history expert on staff, Deliverance got into hot water over its depiction of the time period lacking anyone other than white people - a topic I'm going to steer clear of here, but is fascinating to research.

As for what is in here, you play total nobody Henry on a revenge mission after his town gets levelled by invaders - though the crux is every part of this journey is still bound by real-world rules. Archery doesn't have a targeting reticule, hunting means staying completely still for moments at a time, stealth sees you hugging tree lines and analysing patrol routes - it's a killer setup that is initially very off-putting before things start to click into place.

On the other side of surmounting this struggle is a character comfortable in combat and the world, as you too have grown as a player. It's a risk to pace everything in such a way, and outside many outlets refusing to cover the game thanks to its controversial status, still makes Kingdom Come: Deliverance a recommendable as hell.
