3. Big Smoke

One of the sadder heel turns the GTA franchise has to offer is the decline and fall of Big Smoke.

Initially a close friend of CJ's, there are a variety of clues early on hinting at Big Smoke's impending villainy reveal. Eventually, the drug-dealing menace seems to be in bed with every antagonistic group the game has to offer, forsaking everyone he knew and cared about in the process.

Hints of narcissism are apparent early on, as Big Smoke drones on about his desperate desire to be remembered after death. It's a key character trait that's called back on during his action-packed demise. By that point, the big man's betrayed just about everyone he knows, and clawed his way to the very top of Los Santos' chaotic criminal underworld.

Smoke's betrayal of CJ stems predominantly just from his own greed. He openly admits to CJ he was fine with double-crossing him if it meant a shot at money and criminal glory. It's not exactly the most humane or understandable of reasons to betray one's best friend and, by extension, the community they both came from.
